Good News, Bad News

Good News/Bad News

Good News/Bad News

And then there was the man–look!–
who fell out of an aero plane.  That was the bad news.
But, phew! he fell onto a haystack–
the good news:  that apparently his back
was not broken
through the intervention of
dried grass.
But hey! there was
a needle in that stack–bad news.  Except, wait–
he turned out to have a camel
in his pocket, which fit exactly through the eye
of that needle–good news–
for that took him straight to, do-not-pass-go to,
the kingdom of heaven, not
so much because he was a rich man
but because the haystack hadn’t worked that well after all–
not against a fall
from the sky.

This is the reworking of an old rather silly poem that is actually in my book Going on Somewhere.  I am posting it for Mary’s post “on the other hand” on dVerse Poets Pub.   Check out dVerse.  Check out my books!

hahaha…nice…oy…i like the biblical references and the way you played on the camel through the eye of a needle…some days you cant win for losing…or is that the other way around?

i am glad you are feeling better….

  2. Mary's avatar Mary Says:

Ha, even a haystack (including an eye of a needle as well) would not cushion such a fall!

  5. Well, THIS is a cool and humorous response to the prompt. Loved it, kiddo.

  6. Lightness, levity, a welcome dish for the Pub table; and why not have some fun with the prompt, I say; you certainly did.

  7. heh-heh – what pace and vitality! A poem that has a breathlessness about it or rather makes the reader feel breathless reading it – a delight 🙂

  8. Rallentanda's avatar Rallentanda Says:

Ha…liked the humour in this. It probably was a double bad news item for that guy because the camel in his pocket was a miniscule key ring holder and did not pass the scripture quality control unit…+ double infringement points for trying to fool the angels:)Enjoyed this one!

Remember Roseanne Rosanna Danna, the Gilda Radner character from SNL? That’s the channel playing for me with your fun pen, K ~

A perfect reply to the challenge! Whatever you started with, this packs all of the punch in simple spare compressed language. Sigh.

A haystack is not very good to a rich man, perhaps he could have fallen on his wealth, Interesting and amusing in an modern parable.

  16. Steve King's avatar Steve King Says:

You’ve brought the parable up to date: in our times, the endgame is not almost never in out control. A smart rendering, mixing the old with the new.

Of course the “not” is a result of a hasty posting finger.

  23. Great, great, great! 🙂 Loved all the biblical references. They all fitted so perfectly around your zany, wacky lines. Loved it. Many thanks.

This is both fun and mentally nutritious, k. I enjoyed laughing and chewing it over very much–especially the jumpy style, which works perfectly.
