Sevenling – If Eve Had Been Offered a Pear
Sevenling- If Eve Had Been Offered a Pear
If Eve had been offered a pear
in his world view, there’d be no sin,
death, knowledge of good and evil;
only the press for ripeness, which would have called her
to wait long re-decisionist days for
the fruit to soften, moisten, slither between her lips–
As for me, a woman (and archetypal enough), I like crunch.

The above is a “sevenling” posted for a form and picture prompt by Kerry O’Connor of With Real Toads. Read Kerry’s article for more information about the form which was inspired by Anna Ahkmotova, developed by Roddy Lumsdon. Mine is a rather silly example, but check out Real Toads for some lovely (and more serious) ones.
And if you have even more time, check out my books! Poetry, GOING ON SOMEWHERE, (by Karin Gustafson, illustrated by Diana Barco). 1 Mississippi -counting book for lovers of rivers, light and pachyderms, or Nose Dive, a very fun novel that is perfect for a pool or beachside escape. Nose Dive is available on Kindle for just 99 cents!

I loved the dry humor in your sevenling–especially the slither and crunch (and not really so much humor as wit, a lost art indeed. ) And then I saw the tree shaking elephant and cracked up.

Thanks. That’s an old picture, but I like it too. k.

ha…more elephants, love it….i grew up with pears in the back yard so i like a pear…smiles…but i wont kick an apple to the curb…esp the sour ones…nice use of slither in the second to play off the creation and temptation story….

I’m sure if it was pear and not apple, the masses would still make something up to play the blame game.

I would not be surprised! k.

Oh, clever! I like it!

oh, waiting for the pear can be arduous. welcomed. i like the introduction of this thought into the old story. have never considered another fruit in the mix. I do love how your clever mind spins these scripts and curiosities, k.

Ha! The best last line yet.

If Eve had been offered a pear… a great opening for a riddle…

LOL! That was delightful!

Karin, this made me smile laugh out loud. I have some of these fruits about which I was ‘decisionless’ in my refrigerator that I’m about to throw out. LOL.

PS – hard to get ripeness exactly right! k.

This is just excellent! Such a strong contrast between stanzas, and the final line is just so clever. There is something about women which remains unchanging – that preference for the crunch.

Thanks so much, Kerry. I enjoyed a new form so thanks for letting us know about it. k.

Hahaha – love your wit! This is great, and the elephant is the icing on the cake!

I really like this – partly because I rather love pears. They can be either crunchy or soft and have an interesting shape. 🙂
September 24, 2012 at 3:14 pm
Yes, I like them too, in all manners. It’s a bit of a joke at my husband’s expense who only will really eat them if carefully ripened. k.

Love the ‘crunch’ and bite of your sevenling …..
September 25, 2012 at 1:18 pm
I cracked up!!! Give me pears and apples, both softness and crunch! But above all, let the tasting not be sin nor ever waiting for the OTHER to decide!
September 27, 2012 at 5:33 am
Oh, very neat: a fascinating theological speculation that culminates with your dedication to original sin! I like this very much.
