Affinity

Heart Out of the Box2

Affinity

We are finite
on this fine night
so warm people sit out
on a roof, their feet
dwarf stars,
and I want to hold you
as you are
and as I am
though we aren’t that
even in the next minute
that much closer
to that final lover
whose arms we’ll fold into
alone,
no matter how loved, how close
the stars.

Draft poem for Real Toads open platform. The pic is a photo of a light sculpture made by my husband Jason Martin.  (I’ve edited since first posting, as originally the poem began with “you” rather than “we.”)

Sigh. I prefer to think of my love as infinite.

A great sweetness to this, k, as well as a subtle lyricism that sings the meaning rather than says it. Beautiful imagery, (and an amazing light sculpture–red dwarf stars, indeed.)

Thanks. This was scribbled down in dark of car last night driving back from station, and I didn’t really edit, much. I think I should probably say “we are finite” rather than you–my husband injured himself a bit yesterday so he seemed particularly finite, but I am injured too at the moment so we both fit into that category, I guess. k.

This is very beautiful……”their feet dwarf stars”….and folding at the end “no matter how loved, howclose the stars.” Perfection!

  4. I want to be on that roof, dwarfing stars, folding into my lover’s arms. Dreamy
