Love In A Sweet Spell
Love Poem in a Sweet Spell
He was a prince
among the amenable,
which is to say
she knew where he stood.
More importantly, she also knew
where he lay,
where his head rested,
where his hands roamed,
and that his heart,
for all its fixed lodging–a room at her inn,
room for her within–burned
with a blue-red flame
as if the blood coursing through it
had simply added an “h”
(blood, of all elements
one that is able to spell)
for hearth,
husband,
honeypie.

There is a comfort in how you describe him, and a love, for sure. I know there is more here, but after 17 hours at grad school today, my brain is mush. Ha.

You know I’m a sucker for love poems for our Honeys and this is a good one in its specific surity. In the inevitable ebbs and flows of long-term relationships, the sweet spells are sweet indeed. Day before yesterday in the midst of packing I looked at my Honey and my heart squeezed with affection for him. Lovely.

I was actually thinking of you when writing! Thanks, Mary. Hope your move is going well. K.

This is the best love poem ever!! I have used the word “predictable” but that carries a negative connotation and the word “reliable” is too bland. Your poem, with amenable room within room and all its H’s, is perfect.

“..(blood, of all elements
one that is able to spell)..” I loved this line, which links emotion with intellection as well as feeling–an intelligent loving, yet one that comes from the heart as well as mind–that unity gives strength and longevity to the ephemeral of sensation–all of which is just to say, this is a perfect love poem for the thinking person.

This is so beautiful that I can’t stop grinning. The speaker’s surety fills the heart with wonderful things… things we all need. ♥

To me this is both so sweet and down to earth and at the same time diving as only real love can be.
hearth
husband
honeypie.. love that order.

What a lovely love poem! And your poems are always so original – which might sound like a silly thing to say, but I don’t know how to say it better.
