Waking In Winter

Waking in Winter

Where my flank rests
against your thigh,
I see the color
of closed eyes,
an undercover shade of leg
lidding buttock,
a grey marked
by morning–blurred purple
awaiting rumple–the space slow
to unstick.  Sky outside lighter,
though grey enough,
above the field’s bright sheet,
as it lays down
more snow.

A poem of sorts in 55 words continuing the tradition of the G-Man, Mr. Know-it-all, for Kerry O’Connor’s prompt on With Real Toads; in this case, Kerry asked us also to think about a color.

  1. I love the usage of color in this piece. Adds volumes to the emotion here. Great work!

A lot of gray 55’s today! However, elephants are gray, and that is an excellent thing.

  3. Kerry O'Connor Says:

I think we see the details of our world more clearly on waking – when we get the chance to begin again in our own familiar places.

  4. M Says:

    I really love this line:

    above the field’s bright sheet

how it pops above the grey, just like opening lids in the morning ~

  5. Oh the color of a morning rumple.. really love this with the light outside.. that one I have longed for.. more light.

  6. I love it all… except the last two lines. I am finally tired of snow.

Ha. Well, I know what you mean. We have been doing some cross-country skiing, which makes it better, but this particular snow is not great for skiing–deep and powdery but without a true crust, so that it is tremendously difficult to move around in–very tiring–I was going to write of that but couldn’t get it in 55. Thanks, Debi.
