Awake to Mistakes, Post-Midnight (and Friday Flash 55)

Awake to Mistakes, Post-Midnight

I’ve done it
all wrong.
Everything–and that–
and, Jesus–that too–
How could I be
such an idiot–
They will know, see–

Sky and night,
God, ceiling,
just take me now–
You who’ve let me ape
a somehow someone,
make earth my new mask,
its cold clay clods
my cover.

Here’s a poem for Mama Zen’s Word’s Count on With Real Toads–the prompt to write something under 60 words about insomnia–or what you think of when insomniac– Since this is exactly 55 words, I am also posting for the wonderful G-Man–it is never a mistake to do that–

PS–I appreciate that the drawing/photo is best thing about this post! Poor elephant! (As always, all rights reserved.)

Full of sleep-deprived urgency and forced surrender. I enjoy your take on insomnia, k. and I love the illustration with its supreme perspective.

Poor, tired, sad elephant – def the best thing on the page 😉

  7. Brendan's avatar Brendan Says:

Insomnia traps us in our faux-godhood, tortures us with iterations of all the ways we failed to live up to the divinity we’re supposed to be master of by day. The illustration is perfect.

  8. Very powerful piece – just the right length to pack a punch. These are the kind of thoughts that are bound to accumulate during restless nights.

  9. Mary's avatar Mary Says:

Oh, those thoughts in the middle of the night can move in circles, can’t they? And one’s mistakes can haunt a person’s sleepless state endlessly!

  10. Mama Zen's avatar Mama Zen Says:

You have perfectly captured that never ending loop of the mind. Excellent.

  11. hedgewitch's avatar hedgewitch Says:

Yes, that litany of regrets and pointy memories is no lullaby, but a sing-song mosquito buzz of frustration–because of course, you’re always missing the mosquito with those determinedly closed lids that lead nowhere. Sharp and perceptive, and while I love the drawing, I love the words even better, esp ‘..a somehow someone..’

  12. I think that the days when the whatifs hunt you through sleep depravation.. yes that’s exactly how it is.

  13. Othermary's avatar othermary Says:

Ug – that’s the worst, up all night with your little voices of reproach!
