Walnuts (Washington, D.C.) Flash Friday 55

Walnuts (Washington, D.C.)

Several
glasses of wine, blocks
of stop-start walk, still
can’t get the damn dog down
to business.
December irises make me
wonder if we haven’t wandered all the way
to Tunlaw–street where backwards
gets stuck in front–but don’t think the dog
can read in this dim light. Street signs
too high too.

Sorry not to do link correctly, doing everything on mobile devices the last few days, and I’m not that good at them.

Have a great weekend. k.

  1. Iris in December is definitely an out of sync sort of symbol, and there is a disjointed sense of suspension in this, the way we flounder on sometimes when our mind has set us a goal that overrides immediate feelings and conditions, yet our bodies must interject their confused two cents. Or so I read–I have wandered this way myself a lot in cities, so may be just interjecting my own urban malaise. A lot packed into this 55, k.

Thanks, Hedge. I think I should have added as a process note that Tunlaw is Walnut backwards. My understanding is that naming streets that way was an old-timey kind of joke. The Tunlaw Street in DC was named after a Tunlaw Farms that grew walnuts. The namers thought they were being very tricky.

Hah, like this. I was in need of a little light relief and an inner smile. You gave me both. Thank you

love the wry voice directing this poem and especially the last enjambed phrase which really cinches the mood.

  4. There’s a beautiful quirkiness about this poem. Many thanks.

    Greetings from London.

    Maybe should have
    Given some of the wine
    To the dog.

    Cheers!

    Karin…
Washington DC is enough to drive you backwards.
And a stubborn dog will drive you Crazy!
    Loved your disjointed 55
Thanks for playing, thanks for remembering today…:P:P
    Have a Kick Ass Week-End

haha be careful with the dog and the wine would not want him bumping into anything…hope it finally got the business done for you…such a warm december so far…today got bitter, maybe we are starting to turn and i heard maybe snow by christmas

  9. Nara Says:

Seems to me that this inside out, upside down world Requires a few glasses of wine and a backward dog to help make sense of it.

  10. Luke Prater Says:

I can feel the several glasses of wine in the walk and slight lurch and awkwardness of the poem (in a good way).

I’m not sure that people realize that Tunlaw is Walnut backwards. I read a book years ago that talked about Tunlaw Streets and I’ve always been fascinated by the idea, and I thought it was more well known. I am not far from a Tunlaw Street here in Washingon–too far for the dog but I’ve been jogging on it. Actually got stuck behind Russian Embassy on much longer jog than wanted. (Ha.) Hope all is well, Luke. k.

haha…so good…my daughters used to talk backwards when they “discovered” language…we had lots of fun doing this…good brain training as well… yppah yadrutas…smiles

I have a daylily blooming in the backyard. It is a creamy orange yellow. Vitally out of season, alone in the bed. The rain falls all
around. In the front paperwhites wait their turn.
