Mag 109 – “Post-Mechanics” (What he had wanted was to be a Satyr)
The above and below are based on a photo prompt posted by Tess Kincaid of Magpie Tales. The original photograph is by Robert and Shana Parkeharrison.
Post-Mechanics
What he had wanted
was to be a satyr, a muscle mass
of chest and tendril, unreconstructed
curve–hair, vine, thigh, scrotum-
blip of nipple, smile, wink-
but no–there had to be a
Newton, as in Sir Isaac, a Newton,
as in a unit of force, and urges
were transmuted to
ergs, curves
turning diametrical, bolts
having to be tightened, gears
meshed, and getting caught
in the cross-hairs
wasn’t nearly so much fun
any more, everything
screwed up but
good.

smiles….a satyr would not be nad…and being newton is not too bad a role as martyr? ha…i will need to think on a bit of this…fluid progression i just get lost a bit toward the end there…

Hmmm… well, I am definitely pro-Newton over the Satyrs. I think I mean to be ironic there, or to speak from the p.o.v. of the satyr. Having to tighten bolts seems less fun than dashing about the forest! K.

Love “unreconstructed.” 🙂
And “everything screwed up but good” is certainly a good summary of … everything!

As in Isaac…not “fig”? I always look forward to your clever writes…

Ha! Yes. Thought of that one too. Delicious! k.

I’m not sure it was Newton edged out the wild ones, more like Greed for all that lumber and streams to use for chemical disposal, and getting all the nyphs with your Porsche and a four thousand dollar suit instead of cheap biological fur. I like the mechanical turns this takes, to the logical conclusion, at least of most of the projects I’ve watched in the workshop, ;_)

‘nymphs!’ not nyphs–wth is a nyph?? I think Pearl wrote that.

Yes, I am not against Newton! I was kind of pressured for time, and just had the idea. I think you are right that greed is the big factor–even among Satyrs! K.
(And Pearl makes tons of typos.)

Urges and ergs…ho hum!

The first half dozen lines had me drooling. I just wanted the poem to keep going and not stop.

The “triumph” of science over myth? Cool interpretation. Thank you.
